HAHA! I sneak in first before Cat can post a copy of my email to the lj! ...Technically posting is supposed to be my job anyway, but these days no one seems to read lj so it's rather fallen by the wayside. ANYWAY, as I seem to be awake and unable to do much about that fact, here is the list of what's going on with us...

1. The Friday Film this week is not going to be Logan's Run. There was a slight cock-up mix-up. Whatever. Anyway, since no one seemed to have any preference whatsoever when I asked, our Illustrious Leader, She-who-is-called-Cat, decided that we're watching Firefly episodes, or rather episode, since the first one (two?) is two hours long. Be at Birt Acres in the usual place at 6.30pm to be off to a good start.

2. Our new Exec for next year was decided at the AGM on Friday and is as follows:

President - Seb
Vice President - Amy (Me)
Secretary - Steph W.
Treasurer - Vicky
Social Secretary - Bethan
IT Officer - Amanda

These are the people you'll have to listen to next year. Be afraid. :)

...That's kind of all that needs to go here really. The hoodie thing and the D&D thing are a little bit extraneous.

Anyway, as an experiment I wondered how many people still bother checking livejournal to get news about Sci-Fi so if you feel like dropping me a comment and suggesting a thing we can do with the society (things are pretty meh at the moment) please feel free to do so.

In other, non-Sci-Fi related news, today I've managed to skin the knuckles of two of my fingers at completely different times and in completely different ways. Plasters around the joints does make typing a little bit of a bugger. If the trend continues I expect that by the weekend I will have claws instead of fingers. Or possibly just miles of sticking plaster all over the place. Maybe I will turn into a Mummy... This is starting to sound like tired-stupid-talk. Bed it is.

Night all.
What Up Sci-Fi Dudes and Dudettes?

This is the micro-email, so tiny that you might not even notice that you've read it... Or something. Seriously my intro is practically longer than the whole thing, so read on and hopefully this will keep your attention for just long enough that the information can jump into your brains. :)

1. The Friday Film is actually not a film at all, but a bunch of Buffy episodes, but is still at Birt Acres as per usual. For a change (and because we want to pack in as many eps as possible) we'll be starting at 6.30pm and continuing until we get kicked out at around 9pm. People are welcome to turn up whenever and which episodes to watch will probably get decided on the night. The Facebook link (for those of you who need one) is here - http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=114224075322633&index=1

2. Hoodies. People who owe me money for hoodies need to get their £10 to me as soon as possible. There aren't many of you left who have yet to pay, and I'm hoping to pick them up as soon as I can. (Next week some time.)

That's about it for this week except to say that I'm still not reminding you about the Monday Milgi Meetings and that they're still on every Monday at 7.30pm in Milgi on City Road... Yeah. That was me not reminding you about them... Subtle I ain't.
Hey Sci-Fi Peeps,

S'up? Well. Here we are again. Another week older, probably not a week wiser, but never mind, it's not our fault, it's the University's for stealing our brain-thinkings... By which I mean - 'my brain is mush today, so have a familiar looking email with some bits changed in it'.

1. Friday Film - Same Place, Different Time this week... 6.30pm at Birt Acres, so get there early. This week the film is Scott Pilgrim vs the World, which is awesome and if you haven't seen it you should totally come along. See imdb or wiki for details.

2. The Union's having an AGM and we have to take four soc members with us (preferably students, but I suspect just members will do in a pinch), so if you're interested in the democratic process of the Union and you can attend, please let Cat or I know so we can have you report to a doctor so we can check you over for brainwashing and then come along to the Union on Feb 17th (That's this Thursday) at 6.30pm in the Great Hall.

In all seriousness we do actually need people to volunteer for this otherwise we're going to have to volunteer them on their behalf again and that never ends well. The AGM is always dull as hell and overruns, but I suggest bringing pens and notebooks, reading material and/or music to make it more bearable. Also, I can't promise that there will be sugary sweets and/or chocolate for those who give up their time, but I'm sure something can be arranged. (Sometimes it's amusing as well as being tedious, last year the guys behind us brought beer and a pizza and had a small party.)

3. Monday Milgi Meetings as per, Monday at Milgi from 7.30pm but I'm not going to be sending out any more emails about this because it happens every week and you should have it written down on a beermat or something by now. (I know I have, which, now I come think of it, is possibly why I keep missing them.)

4. We're having a Food Party on the 19th (that's next Saturday), starting at about 8pm. For those of you who've never been to one of our food parties before the principle is thus: Make some foody thing that is loosely Sci-Fi based. Bring it to the party. Watch everyone go oooh. Eat it.

Suggestions - In the past we've had; Gingerbread Redshirts, cake that was pie, Klingon Gagh, Bloodwine, Jelly Babies, Jaffa cakes (with Jaffa symbols on them), CMOT Dibbler's suspicious looking sausages-inna-bun, Fish Custard, Pan-Galactic Gargle-Blasters, Sonic Screwdrivers (another drink), Stargate Brownie, jelly brains, a banana and a whole bunch of other stuff. ...Use your imagination!

Now with facebook link! - http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=129354007133847

5. There's an Event coming to Cardiff, The Cardiff International Comic Expo! It's on Saturday the 26th and you can go to the website or the Facebook Group for more details, but the main thing is that this time the Expo is coming to us, so we (I) don't have to try and work out coaches, trains, minibuses or hotels for twenty people! (Thank goodness.) If you want me to arrange a mass outing to the Expo it can be done, on the other hand if you'd rather not meet up that's fine too, and if you'd like to buzz 'round the Con hall on your own, but meet up for lunch and then buzz off again, that's also plausible, just let me know what you're planning by emailing me here.

Website: http://www.fantasyevents.org/index.html
Facebook Group: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=163146757048361

Please note that this is an EXPO, not a CONVENTION. The difference is that there'll be more comics and less guests than a convention, but it's still well worth going, especially if you're into comics and want to pick up some more, or if you've always wanted to get into comics but never had the opportunity, because there's shedloads and a lot of them are very cheap.

6. Hoodies. Now is the time of reckoning. If you ordered one you need to give £10 to Cat or me asap. No money, no hoodie. They will be held to ransom if needs be.

...That is all. (Yes I know I've essentially copy/pasted the entire email from last week, you try writing emails to the same group of people for two years without repeating yourself. It's tricky, sometimes you just have to boldfacedly brazen it out.)
Hullo there Sci-Fi Peeps and welcome to one of the last Sci-Fi emails of the term. (It's panto season, so say it with me kids: "Awwwwwww!")

This week I shall be short and sweet:

1. This Friday is our SECRET SANTA so if you're involved, you need to get your gift before then, wrap it (preferably in newspaper) and bring it along. We'll be in Birt Acres as per usual, but We'll start at 6.30pm with a Doctor Who Christmas Special just to get everyone in the Christmassy mood (and also to let stragglers get their butts over to the place) and then we'll be launching right into the presents. We may or may not go and get food afterwards.

2. Hoodies. This is your last chance to acquire one. If you want one, you can EITHER email me here, OR ask me on Friday when I'll have my notebook with me to write down details. I need to know: Whether you want a zip or a non-zip hoody, What colour you want, What size and what you want written on it (25 characters or less). The deadline is next Monday, so hurry up. (I won't need money until the new year, so don't worry about it too much if you haven't got the cash now.)

3. Monday is the last of our official Monday Milgi Meetings for the term (although they usually go on over the holidays anyway in one form or another) so I'll be bringing the game we should have played two weeks ago, but didn't because of a mix-up - Let's Make a Geeky Date. If you've never seen Whose Line is it Anyway, this is the basic idea - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPi5QVlqEaY&feature=related - Then we substitute geeky characters for the slightly more normal(ish) ones in the show. ...You'll get the idea. In any case, I shall bring that and we'll have a few rounds of it over the course of the evening (provided we have the yurt to ourselves) and you can bring stuff you want to play too and we'll mess around and play a bunch of different games. Woot. :)

Now all that's left of this email is for me to wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Merry Saturnalia, Happy Kwanzaa, Merry Festivus, Happy Turkey-Day, Nadolig Llawen, Happy Diwali, Buon Natale, Merry Solstice, Happy Hogswatch (etc, etc) and I hope I'll see you all in the New Year for Winter-een-mas and the new term. We'll have lots more cool stuff to do and hopefully it won't be deathly freezing cold and dark all the time! :D
Hey Sci-Fi Peeps,

This week I'm afraid Amy is still not back on top form, so I'm afraid your stuck with a slightly dry read of an email. In Chronomalogical order, stuff what is happening this week:

1. Friday Film is The Wicker Man the original not the rubbish Nicholas Cage remake. Anyway, the start time's 7.15pm, so be there sharpish.

2. After the Friday Film we're going to head over to Cafe Jazz which is on St Mary's Street and is a bar that got in contact with us and would like to host our meetings week to week. While we have got Milgi to go to, and are thus not really in the market for a new place, we have been shunted about a bit with the yurt and Cafe Jazz have offered us some pretty sweet deals, so we're going to go along and check it out. Its 20% off food and drink, so come along to the Friday Film and have a drink with us afterwards. (The food looks pretty good and most helpfully, pretty cheap too!)

3. This is your 2 week reminder for the Secret Santa. I'll be posting a reminder once a week now until we get there. ~£10 and if you have no idea what to get ask someone for help or just get something ridiculous. We're all geeks, that's why we joined. If you don't know someone personally, get them something generally dorky. Or something embarrassing. We like that too!

4. The Christmas meal. If you want to go, sign up on the Facebook so that Bex can get an idea of who's coming and book us a table with enough chairs at it.http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=129270760463675 If you haven't got a Facebook (I know I haven't) just email me here to let us know you're interested.

5. Hoodies. If you want one I'll be bringing the list and colour sheet to the Friday Film. I'm going to order them before Christmas so hopefully we can get them to wear in the New Year.

6. If you hadn't already guessed we've got a Monday Milgi Meeting on Monday at Milgi. Usual time, usual place. No games planned but feel free to bring stuff to play if you'd like.

That's it guys! I'm off to do work **Shakes fist at course**.

Cat Griffiths
Sci-Fi Society President
1. Friday Film. It should be Alien Hunter, but we can't find it, and suspect that it has gone back to Cambridge by accident, so instead of 'fake stargate' we'll be watching actual Stargate. Or if you have a better suggestion (that's about 2 hours long) bring it along on Friday and we might watch that instead. Either way, the start time's 6.30pm, so be there sharpish.

I believe the first round is on them, so come along to the Friday Film and have a drink with us afterwards. (The food looks pretty good and most helpfully, pretty cheap too!)

3. This is your 3 week reminder for the Secret Santa.

If you want to go, sign up on the Facebook so that Bex can get an idea of who's coming and book us a table with enough chairs at it. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=129270760463675 If you haven't got a Facebook (I know I haven't) just email me here to let us know you're interested.

1. This week's Friday Film is not exactly a film. We've got some Supernatural episodes to watch instead. We're going to try for the Birt Acres Lecture theatre, as per normal, but if it's still as buggered as it was last week we may have to ditch out again and head back for ours. Hope you're okay with that. We'll be starting 6pm, but as we'll be (hopefully) playing a few eps, feel free to turn up at any time.

2. The Monday Milgi Meeting will be a Quiz. 5 questions per fandom, some easy, some difficult, as many fandoms as I can think of. If anyone has any fandoms to suggest that they think I might not have thought of, lists emailed to me at: fidget177@gmail.com would be appreciated.

3. On Monday last the Secret Santa was drawn. If you're not in it now, you can't be added in. Sorry, but that's the way it goes. Those of you who are in the draw, pick something about £10 in value and if you've no idea what to get for your person either ask one of their mates or fall back on the traditional Sci-Fi standard - something horribly embarrassing.

4. Our own Christmas meal is coming up fast. If you want to attend (and since it's an all you can eat buffet it's not going to cost you much) please either sign up on the facebrook group: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=129270760463675 OR email me here if you haven't got a facebook. We need to know numbers asap so we can book it, so please do get in touch.
1. The Friday Film. We're having one. It's on Friday. It's V for Vendetta, which seemed appropriate given that Friday is actually Bonfire Night, so we can 'remember, remember' in style. 6.30pm (EARLY FOR A CHANGE TO FIT THE SLIGHTLY LONGER FILM IN, PLEASE TAKE NOTE) Birt Acres, Bute Building. You know the rest of the drill and I'll see you there.

2. The Yule Ball with Harry Potter Soc is still looking for people who'd like tickets, but the money needs to be in by Friday. If you want to go (and it is awesome, so you might want to consider it) give me your name, a list of dietary requirements if you have 'em and the £25 on Friday at the film so I can pass them on to Alex.

3. Monday Milgi Meeting is as per usual. Casual, no game planned this week, but if anyone feels like bringing cards or fluxx or whatever along then we might play. Otherwise it's a laid-back meeting. However we are doing...

4. The Secret Santa Draw on Monday, so if you want to participate but can't be with us please email me with your name and the name of another person in the society who can be collaborated with to get you a good present if the person who draws you out of the hat has no idea for suggestions. If you are not there I'll draw out the names left over at the end and assign them randomly to whoever is left over.

5. I'll be bringing the colour chart and the table of names with me to meetings (Fridays and Mondays) from now on so that anyone who wants a hoodie can sign up for one. If you can't get along to a meeting the hoodies come in a range of sizes a variety of colours and have our Sci-Fi logo and the date embroidered on one side of the chest and whatever name or slogan you want embroidered on the other side. They'll be about £10 and they're comfy and warm.
Greetings, and welcome to another round of Sci-Fi email, the least coherent email written by someone with insomnia in Cardiff!

Blargh! I am possibly not at my best to be delivering information of great import, but here I am, I'll have a go...

1. The Friday Film this week is back at the usual time and place of Bute Building, starting at 7pm. This week: The Weeping Angel episodes of Doctor Who. ...If we can get hold of them all. (It seemed like such an easy idea at the time, to watch them at Halloween and then have to walk back through the park where half of those bloody statues are in order to get back home, but we're experiencing technical difficulties in the way that we don't have them all on DVD yet. So plausibly the Friday Film may well be changed to something a bit more Halloween-y, of the Sleepy Hollow/Beetlejuice variety. If there's anything you in particular want to see (provided it's less than 2 hrs long), bring along the DVD on Friday and if we haven't gotten the DW eps we'll take the vote then.)

2. The Halloween Party! Saturday at the geek house, from 7.30pm onwards until it finishes... Costumes are encouraged (as well as being fun) and the best ones will get a prize, but they're not compulsory, so don't panic if you can't think of one. Also encouraged is the bringing of nibbly snacks, alcohol and mixers. We all chip in with this, because we can't get money from the Union to pay for food and drinks, so sharing is key. (If you have special dietary requirements or allergies you might want to bring something you know will be safe for you to eat/drink.) So drag out your best party brains and join us to celebrate ridiculousness and geekery through the medium of partying. If you know where you're going, we'll see you after 7.30, if not we'll send an envoy to collect people from outside the Woodville pub at 7.15 to show you the way. If you need more information about the party or whatever please email me at this address, and put the society phone number into your mobiles (it's in the signature of this email) so that if you get lost somewhere in Cathays you can call and we'll try to help you find your way over.

3. The Monday Milgi Meeting is on as usual and this week we're playing Geek Bingo (provided I can make the boards in time). Turn up to Milgi from 7.30pm and we'll be there in the yurt. We're not walking people over anymore, we're hoping you all know where you're going by now, but if you haven't been along to a meeting yet or just can't remember the way, please feel free to email, text or whatever and I'll arrange to meet you and walk you across. Otherwise I'll see you there.

4. Does anyone fancy going to the Yule Ball? It's on the 5th of December at Park Inn starting at 6.15pm and with a 3 course meal, dancing and karaoke, all for £25. It will be a good night out, it always is, and it's an excuse to get dolled up all fancy-like... Tickets can be obtained by emailing me and letting me know how many you want, and I'll get the details through to Alex who's organising everything. I will be the one harassing you about money though.

5. RAWR! Hoodies! I'm going to be bringing colour samples and my chart of awesomeness to meetings after Halloween, so if you want a hoodie you can sign up right away. I want to get the hoodies sorted before Christmas this year, so you'll have to decide pretty quickly if you want one or not. (If loads of people decide they want Hoodies in January I might do a second run of them, but it is likely that those would cost more.) I'll extract the (probably) £10 from you at some point between me ordering them and you getting them... There will be no wearing of the hoodies without payment!

Thankfully for both your sanity and mine, that's all I have for you this week. I've sent off the list of names of people who volunteered to be on the radio to Amanda and I'm waiting to hear back from her on the subject. When she does get back to me I'll email just the individuals involved!

Night all,

Oct. 15th, 2010

Hey there Sci-Fi Peeps,

Here's the Sci-Fi email, a little bit more complicated (and longer) than last week, but chock full of information-y goodness, so pay attention!

1. The Friday Film this week is Nothing, (which is to say that it's a film called Nothing, not that we aren't having a film at all) which we'll be running in the Birt Acres Lecture Theatre, Bute Building, starting at 7pm. For those of you returning to the Society, you know where you're going, you can meet us there. For those of you who are new and don't know where you're going or what you're doing, we'll be meeting outside the FRONT of the Union from 6.30pm to leave at 6.45pm to walk you over to the Bute Building. If you need more details about the film you could check out the imdb page, but imdb seems to have gone a bit sucky of late and there isn't much info on the page anyway (except in the review section where someone's basically written out the entire film, *sigh*).

2. The Lightsaber Tournament is on this Saturday (weather permitting, or possibly Sunday if Saturday gets rained off). A chance for us to gather our geekyness and our love of messing about like small children together with our glee for lightsabers. Meeting outside the FRONT of the Union at 1pm, bring lightsabers if you have them, wear sensible shoes and Jedi robes if you want to. There is a trophy to be won, so try your hardest!

3. The Monday Milgi Meeting. If you know where you're going we'll meet you there from 7.30pm in the yurt, if not, we'll be meeting outside the BACK of the Union from 7pm, leaving at 7.15pm to walk people over to Milgi. This week is the last week we'll be walking people over (probably) so if you still don't know where you're going, come along with us and make sure you can walk the walk. This week we'll be playing Werewolf! Rules will be explained once we get there!

4. The Union keeps on at us about people signing up to the society, so if you haven't yet signed up, please go to Campus Groups: http://groups.cardiffstudents.com/club_signup and when it doesn't work (because the website is really rubbish and keeps breaking) email the Union or Jemma Mallorie (malloriej1@cardiff.ac.uk) the Societies Coordinator at the Union to tell them that it doesn't work.

5. Now that we have the society phone up and running, we're offering a service to those of you who might have trouble getting your emails or just need an extra kick to remind them when things are happening. Text Message Alerts. It'll be 10p a month to sign up for and you can either sign up for a few months or one at a time. The only reason it costs anything at all is because we have to put credit on the Soc phone in order for us to send the texts in the first place. We'll be taking names, phone numbers and money from this Friday. Just get hold of me if you want to sign up.

6. Our Treasurer Ian is going to start running DnD groups and would like to know who's interested. Email me here so I can pass it on or email him at: puffin21718@gmail.com If you are interested, please let Ian know if you've played before and are more serious about it or are new to it and want to try it out, as he is setting up two separate groups. He also wants to know if you will want a new character created for you or if you want to create a new one for yourself.

7. (Last but not least) I'm going to start from Monday organising Hoodies and I wondered if I could get a small show of hands for people who are interested in getting one. They usually cost about £10, have our SciFi logo on them as well as the year, come in loads of different colours, and have the slogan/quote/name of your choice. If you think you'll want one, email me to let me know.

Where We Are & What We Do

On Mondays we meet at (the amazing) Milgi's (213 City Road, CF24 3JD) from 7:30pm onwards for general chat and to vote on what film we watch on Friday.

Friday Films normally take place in the Birt Acres lecture Theatre in the Bute Building from 6:45pm onwards. These times depend on the length of the film.

By clicking the "Where We Are & What We Do" link above you be able to see a map of Cardiff showing these locations.

If you would like to receive a weekly update with details of the Friday Film and other Sci-Fi activities such as parties and the like, please email: cardiff.scifi@gmail.com
